Fitment

Engine (RPO) Years VIN 8th digit Block Vehicles Cylinder deactivation Valve timing
LMF 2010-2014 4 Iron Chevrolet Express / GMC Savana 1500 (2010-2014) None VVT (cam phaser)
LH9 2010-2012 P Aluminum Flex fuel (E85). Chevrolet Colorado / GMC Canyon (2010-2012) None VVT (cam phaser)

Confirm by VIN: 2010 Hummer H3 / H3T Alpha with the LH9 (VIN P) is listed by only one of our sources. Send us your VIN.

2008-2009 LMF and 2008-2009 LH8 (Express / Savana, Colorado / Canyon, H3) have no VVT: see our GM 5.3L non-AFM, non-VVT (2003-2009: LM7 / L59 / L33 / LM4 / LMF / LH8) listing.

VIN P: on 2010-2012 Colorado / Canyon, VIN P means LH9 (this listing). On 2003-2005 mid-size SUVs and the SSR it means LM4: see our GM 5.3L non-AFM, non-VVT (2003-2009: LM7 / L59 / L33 / LM4 / LMF / LH8) listing.

Confirm your engine

  • VIN: the 8th digit of your VIN is the engine code (4 = LMF, P = LH9).
  • RPO code: look for the engine RPO code on the Service Parts Identification (SPID) label, usually in the glove box.
  • Gen III vs Gen IV: 1999-2007 Gen III 5.3L engines use a 24x crank reluctor with the cam sensor at the rear of the block; 2007-2014 Gen IV truck engines use a 58x crank reluctor with the cam sensor in the front cover.
  • VVT: 2010-2014 VVT engines have a cam phaser on the front of the camshaft (behind the timing cover) and a phaser control solenoid on the front cover.
  • AFM: AFM engines have the lifter oil manifold (solenoid assembly) under the intake manifold in place of a plain valley cover.

Casting numbers

  • Block (LMF, cast iron, Gen IV): 12576177, 12576178 or 12589779
  • Block (LH9, aluminum, Gen IV): 12571048, 12601900, 12569513 or 12568573
  • Cylinder heads: 799 or 243 (cathedral port; last three digits of the casting number)

Where to find casting numbers: the block casting number is on the driver side rear of the block, just above the bellhousing flange and below the driver-side cylinder head (hard to read in the vehicle; a mirror and flashlight help). On the cylinder heads, the last three digits of the casting number are cast into the head near the corner/end, just below the valve cover.

Check the 8th digit of your VIN (4 = LMF, P = LH9) or the RPO code on the SPID label, and choose your engine code from the dropdown. Send us your VIN to confirm fitment.

Notes

  • The valley plate (lifter valley cover) is not included; reuse yours from your current engine. These engines have no AFM, so it is a plain cover.

Call 623-204-6365 for a freight quote before ordering. Approx. weight 400 lbs (aluminum block) / 550 lbs (cast iron block).

Break-in

The first 1,000 miles are the break-in period. Use conventional oil only, change the oil and filter at 500 miles, vary your RPM, and avoid towing, heavy loads and long idling. Check your oil level regularly, since some oil burn-off is normal until the rings seat. Following the break-in procedure is required to keep your warranty.

Warranty, core and performance parts

Warranty: 1-year unlimited-mile warranty on the engine only; labor is not covered. Optional 3-year extended warranty available for $1,500 (includes labor coverage at $50/hr). See our Warranty & Refund Policy. Add the 3-year extended warranty to your order.

Core charge: none. All engines are built to order.

Performance parts: we do not blueprint engines. We can install custom or performance parts you supply (you pay for the parts and shipping them to us; no extra installation charge), but this waives the 1-year warranty.
