Confirm your engine

• Engine year and ignition: choose the group that matches your Jeep above. The 4.0L changed in 1996 (OBD-II) and again when the distributor was replaced by a coil rail, so the year matters.
• Distributor or coil rail: a distributor (round cap with plug wires) means distributor. A coil pack rail bolted across the top of the valve cover, with no distributor, means coil rail. 1999 is a split year (Cherokee and Wrangler have a distributor, Grand Cherokee WJ has a coil rail). Confirm by VIN.
• Head casting: 7120 (1991-1995), 0630 (1996-1999/2000, distributor), 0331 (coil rail, 1999-2006).
• VIN 8th digit: S on 1999-2006 4.0L engines.

Notes

• Reuse your own flywheel or flexplate and crank position sensor. Manual and automatic versions are different, so keep the ones that came on your Jeep.
• We pressure check and inspect every head for cracks.
• Fix any cooling system problem before installing your new engine.

Break-in

The first 1,000 miles are the break-in period. Use conventional oil only, change the oil and filter at 500 miles, vary your RPM, and avoid towing, heavy loads and long idling. Check your oil level regularly, since some oil burn-off is normal until the rings seat. Following the break-in procedure is required to keep your warranty.

Warranty, core and performance parts

Warranty: 1-year unlimited-mile warranty on the engine only; labor is not covered. Optional 3-year extended warranty available for $1,500 (includes labor coverage at $50/hr). See our Warranty & Refund Policy. Add the 3-year extended warranty to your order.

Core charge: none. All engines are built to order.

Performance parts: we do not blueprint engines. We can install custom or performance parts you supply (you pay for the parts and shipping them to us; no extra installation charge), but this waives the 1-year warranty.
