Fitment

Confirm your engine

Toyota calls both engines 2TR-FE. Toyota built it in two versions: single VVT-i (2005-2015) and dual VVT-i (2016-2023). They are NOT interchangeable. Your new engine must match your truck.

• Go by model year: 2005-2015 Tacoma and 2010 4Runner = single VVT-i. 2016-2023 Tacoma (the redesigned 3rd-generation Tacoma) = dual VVT-i.
• Check the 10th digit of your VIN (the model-year code): F = 2015 (single VVT-i). G = 2016, H = 2017, J = 2018, K = 2019, L = 2020, M = 2021, N = 2022, P = 2023 (all dual VVT-i).
• The 5th digit of the VIN won't tell you. It is X (2.7L 2TR-FE) on both versions, so use the model year (10th digit) instead.
• Look at the engine: the dual VVT-i engine has a second cam phaser on the exhaust camshaft, with a second VVT-i oil control solenoid on top of the valve cover. The single VVT-i engine has a cam phaser on the intake cam only.

Oil pan and oil pickup

• In 11/2014 Toyota changed the oil pan and oil pickup on the 2.7L. Reuse your original oil pan and pickup together; our engine fits all 2005–2015 trucks.
• This engine ships without an oil pan or oil pickup. Transfer the oil pan and oil pickup from your current engine.

Casting numbers

The "2TR" mark is cast on the rear face of the cylinder head (see photo).

The "2TR" casting mark confirms you have a 2TR-FE engine, but the block casting is the same on the single and dual VVT-i versions, so it can't tell them apart. Use your model year / VIN 10th digit or the exhaust cam phaser check above.

Finding your engine number: Toyota stamps the engine code and serial number (2TR- followed by a 7-digit number) on the left side of the engine block, toward the rear of the block (Toyota's documented location for 2005-2010 Tacoma and 2010 4Runner).

Break-in

The first 1,000 miles are the break-in period. Use conventional oil only, change the oil and filter at 500 miles, vary your RPM, and avoid towing, heavy loads and long idling. Check your oil level regularly, since some oil burn-off is normal until the rings seat. Following the break-in procedure is required to keep your warranty.

Warranty and core

Warranty: 1-year unlimited-mile warranty on the engine only; labor is not covered. Optional 3-year extended warranty available for $1,500 (includes labor coverage at $50/hr). See our Warranty & Refund Policy. Add the 3-year extended warranty to your order.
