Engine (RPO) Years VIN 8th digit Block Vehicles
LY6 2007-2009 K Iron Chevrolet Silverado / GMC Sierra 2500HD, 3500HD (2007-2009, new body style); Chevrolet Suburban 2500 / GMC Yukon XL 2500 (2007-2009); Chevrolet Express / GMC Savana 2500, 3500 (2008-2009)

Casting numbers

Use these to compare engines and find yours. Casting numbers are cast into the metal, not stamped.

Engine (RPO) Years VIN 8th digit Block Block casting Cylinder head casting Factory AFM VVT
LQ4 2001-2007 U Iron 12551364, 12573581 or 12577184 317 or 035 (aluminum, cathedral port) No No
LQ9 2002-2007 N Iron 12551364, 12573581 or 12577184 317 or 035 (aluminum, cathedral port) No No
LY6 2007-2009 (some early 2010 HD trucks) K Iron 12576181 823 or 5364 (aluminum, rectangular port) No Yes
L96 2010-2019 G Iron 12576181 823 or 5364 (aluminum, rectangular port) No Yes

Several engines share the same block and head castings (LQ4 / LQ9 share castings, and so do LY6 / L96), so casting numbers can't pick out one RPO by themselves. Always confirm with your VIN 8th digit (U = LQ4, N = LQ9, K = LY6, G = L96) or the RPO code on your SPID label.

Where to find casting numbers: the block casting number is on the driver side rear of the block, just above the bellhousing flange and below the driver-side cylinder head (hard to read in the vehicle; a mirror and flashlight help). On the cylinder heads, the last digits of the casting number are cast into the head near the corner/end, just below the valve cover.

Confirm your engine

  • Engine: choose Non-VVT (LQ4 / LQ9) or VVT (LY6 / L96) above.
  • VIN 8th digit and RPO code: U = LQ4, N = LQ9, K = LY6, G = L96. The RPO code is on the Service Parts Identification (SPID) label, usually in the glove box.
  • Gen III vs Gen IV: LQ4 / LQ9 are Gen III engines with a 24x crank reluctor and the cam sensor at the rear of the block; LY6 / L96 are Gen IV engines with a 58x crank reluctor and the cam sensor in the front cover. We build to match your VIN.
  • VVT: LY6 / L96 engines have a cam phaser on the front of the camshaft (behind the timing cover) and a phaser control solenoid on the front cover.
  • Not sure? Choose "Not sure" in the dropdown and call 623-204-6365 or put notes on the order.

Send us your VIN with your order to confirm fitment.

Notes

  • Built on your factory 6.0L cast-iron block. None of the covered engines came with AFM.

  • LFA (VIN 5) and LZ1 (VIN J), 6.0L hybrid engines
  • LC8 (VIN B), 6.0L CNG/LPG

Cam stages

Same price for every stage. Choose your engine (Non-VVT or VVT) and stage above.

  • Stage 1: mild performance idle. Typical gain: about +40 hp with a proper tune; results vary by vehicle, tune, and supporting mods.
  • Stage 2: mild performance idle. Typical gain: about +50 hp with a proper tune; results vary by vehicle, tune, and supporting mods.
  • Stage 3: strongest mid-to-upper RPM pull of the three, with a choppy, noticeable lope at idle and an aggressive exhaust note.
  • Stage 1 and Stage 2 gain figures are based on Cam Motion's dyno tests of these cams on a 6.0L.
  • Cam core: 5150 steel core standard. 8620 core upgrade available on request (price quoted).

VVT (LY6 / L96): COMP Cams

Stage Cam Part # Duration @ .050 (int/exh) Lift (int/exh) LSA RPM range

COMP's single-bolt Gen IV VVT cams with a COMP phaser limiter, matched to the cam phaser in your engine. Most LY6 / L96 engines use the GM 12606358 phaser (COMP 189-series cam above with the 5460 limiter). Some 2007-2008 engines have the earlier GM 12585994 phaser; those get COMP's matching 156-series version of the same grind (156-400-13, 156-401-13 or 156-402-13) with the 5456 limiter. COMP rates Stage 1 for off-idle torque in trucks and heavy vehicles, and Stage 2 for heavy vehicles with stock gearing. Call us about converter and gearing for Stage 3.

Keep or delete VVT, no extra charge. Choose what fits your truck and tell us in the order notes (or call 623-204-6365):

  • Keep VVT (recommended for most trucks): best low-end torque, towing, and drivability; uses the COMP VVT cam with a phaser limiter.
  • Delete VVT: removes the cam phaser for simpler, fixed cam timing and more cam choices; best for bigger cams or boosted builds; can give up some low-end torque.

A VVT delete requires a tune to turn off VVT. If you don't tell us, we keep VVT.

Custom / other brand cam (+$300): we can use any make of camshaft you request (Brian Tooley, Texas Speed, Comp, Cam Motion and more). Custom grinds are non-refundable.

Results vary with tune, converter, gearing and supporting mods.

Every stage includes

  • Cam installed in your engine
  • Matching valve springs
  • Pushrods
  • VVT phaser limiter on VVT engines (COMP 5460, or 5456 for the earlier 12585994 phaser)

Tune required. A tune is required to run the cam. We do not tune.

Break-in

The first 1,000 miles are the break-in period. Use conventional oil only, change the oil and filter at 500 miles, vary your RPM, and avoid towing, heavy loads and long idling. Check your oil level regularly, since some oil burn-off is normal until the rings seat. Follow our break-in procedure.
